The Magic of Milk Soaps — And Why Your Skin Will Thank You

If you've never tried a milk soap, you're in for a treat. Here's everything you need to know about why milk has been used in skincare for centuries — and how to find the right one for your skin.
There's a reason Cleopatra famously bathed in milk. It sounds indulgent, a little extravagant, and honestly — a bit over the top. But she was onto something that skincare scientists have since confirmed: milk is genuinely wonderful for your skin.
At Ma's Goodie's, milk soaps have become some of our most-loved bars. Not because they're trendy, but because they work. The creamy lather, the way your skin feels after — soft, calm, and nourished rather than tight and stripped — it's something our customers come back for again and again.
So let's talk about what makes milk soaps so special, what actually happens when milk meets soap, and how to figure out which milk soap is right for your skin.

What Does Milk Actually Do in Soap?
When milk is used in cold process soapmaking, it brings a whole host of skin-loving properties along with it.
Milk — whether it's goat, oat, or rice — contains naturally occurring lactic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps to exfoliate dead skin cells, encourage cell renewal, and leave your complexion looking brighter and more even over time. It's a very subtle effect, nothing harsh or clinical — just a gentle nudge in the right direction.
Milk also contains fats, proteins, and vitamins that help to moisturise and nourish the skin as you cleanse. Where a standard commercial soap can leave your skin feeling dry and squeaky (that tight feeling is actually your skin's natural oils being stripped away), a milk soap leaves it feeling genuinely comfortable and soft.
The sugars naturally present in milk also contribute to a richer, creamier lather — and if you've ever used one of our milk soaps, you'll know exactly what we mean. That thick, silky foam is no accident.
Why Handmade Milk Soap Is Different
Here's something worth knowing: commercial soap manufacturers often remove the glycerin from their soap during production, because glycerin is a valuable byproduct they can sell separately for use in lotions and cosmetics. That's why so many mass-produced soaps feel drying.
In handmade cold process soap, all of that naturally occurring glycerin stays in the bar. Combined with milk's inherent moisturising properties, you end up with a bar that cleanses and cares for your skin at the same time. It's a small thing that makes a very big difference.
At Ma's Goodie's, every milk soap is made by hand in small batches in Auckland, using real milk — not powdered milk reconstituted with water — because we believe the quality of every ingredient matters.
Our Three Milk Soaps — And How to Choose
We currently have three milk soaps in our artisan soap range, and while they share that same creamy, nourishing base, each one is formulated with a specific skin type in mind. Here's how they compare:

🥛 Goat's Milk & Manuka Honey Soap
For dry, mature, or very sensitive skin
Goat's milk is one of the most skin-compatible milks you can use in soap. Its pH is naturally close to human skin, which means it works with your skin barrier rather than against it. It's rich in fatty acids that deeply moisturise, and packed with vitamins A, B2, B3, and C.
Paired with New Zealand Manuka honey — one of nature's most powerful humectants and skin soothers — this is our most deeply nourishing milk soap. It's the one we reach for in winter, or for anyone whose skin tends towards dryness, sensitivity, or maturity. The lather is rich and creamy, and the scent is warm and comforting.
Best for: Dry skin, mature skin, very sensitive skin, winter skincare
🥣 Oat Milk & Colloidal Oatmeal Honey Soap
For sensitive, irritated, or eczema-prone skin
Oat milk and colloidal oatmeal are a dream team for reactive skin. Oat milk brings gentle cleansing and moisture, while colloidal oatmeal — finely milled oats suspended throughout the bar — is clinically recognised for its ability to calm inflammation, relieve itching, and support the skin's natural barrier function.
We've also added raw honey to this bar for its humectant and soothing properties, along with shea butter, oat oil, and sunflower oil for a bar that is genuinely one of the most nourishing in our range. If your skin is prone to redness, irritation, or eczema flare-ups, this bar was made for you.
Best for: Sensitive skin, eczema-prone skin, irritated or reactive skin, anyone who needs a truly gentle daily soap
🌸 Rice Milk & Clay Soap
For combination, oily, or dull skin
Rice milk takes a slightly different approach. While it shares that lactic acid brightening quality that all milk soaps have, rice milk is particularly rich in vitamins and amino acids that are associated with a more luminous, even complexion. It's been a skincare staple in East Asian beauty traditions for centuries — and for very good reason.
We've paired it with rice bran oil (a natural companion from the same grain), kaolin clay to gently lift impurities and excess oil, and a touch of French pink clay for a subtle refining action. The result is a bar that gives you that clean feeling — genuinely cleansed and refreshed — without stripping or drying your skin out.
Best for: Combination skin, oily skin, dull or congested skin, anyone wanting a daily brightening cleanse
Which Milk Soap Is Right for You?
Still not sure? Here's a simple way to think about it:
If your skin feels tight, dry, or irritated → reach for the Goat's Milk & Manuka Honey or the Oat Milk & Colloidal Oatmeal Honey bar. Both are deeply nourishing, but the oat milk bar has that extra layer of anti-inflammatory support from colloidal oatmeal.
If your skin feels congested, oily, or a bit dull → the Rice Milk & Clay bar is your match. The clays will gently purify while the rice milk brightens.
If you're buying as a gift → honestly, any of them make a beautiful gift. But if you're not sure of the recipient's skin type, the Goat's Milk & Manuka Honey bar is a crowd-pleaser — it's one of our most universally loved bars.
A Final Note
One of the things I love most about making milk soaps is that they feel genuinely kind. In a world full of skincare that stings, strips, and overwhelms, there's something really lovely about a bar of soap that just takes care of your skin — gently, quietly, every single day.

That's always been the heart of Ma's Goodie's. Skincare that feels beautiful to use, and that your skin actually thanks you for.
If you haven't tried a milk soap yet, I hope this gives you the nudge you need. And if you already have a favourite — I'd love to hear which one in the comments below. 💛
